What does this OFAC check search?
It compares the name you enter with every name and alias on the US Treasury OFAC Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) list, using a copy of the list we refresh several times a day.
What does a possible match mean?
A possible match means the name resembles a listed entry closely enough that a person should look at it. It is not a finding that the vendor is sanctioned. Compare the address, country, registration details and remarks before deciding.
How is the match strength worked out?
Both names are normalised (legal suffixes and punctuation removed), then compared by shared words, by character similarity and by whether one name sits inside the other. The best of the three is the score out of 100. Exact means the normalised names are identical.
Do you store the names I search?
No. The name is used for the check and then discarded. We keep only a daily count of how many checks ran.
Is this legal advice?
No. It is a screening aid. Decisions about sanctions compliance belong to you and, where needed, your legal counsel.
How do I screen all my vendors?
Create a free VendorVett account. Each vendor you add can be screened on its legal name against the OFAC SDN list (and the UK, EU and UN lists where enabled), with each possible match recorded for review and every decision kept in your audit trail. Vendors you have screened are re-screened when the lists change.
